Well, Rob had a hospital appointment to get to so after our very pleasant stay to make sure we made it , we arrived at the airport for the 8.20am flight to Aberdeen.
Not much snow about so we took off on time znd saw so.e weird cloud formations. Robs appointment was OK but confirmed what we thought, the nerve damage from his shoulder has been left too long to fix. It looks like the shoulder surgery can go ahead in the new year though.
The temperature dropped throughout the day but we got back to the airport ready for the 6pm flight. With a disability they get you on first which can be helpful. Unfortunately it was so cold the ramp froze. Health and safety said it was too dangerous for disabled folk to use the steps, so they got the ambu lift out. This attaches to the titsy tiny door which was tricky. They then boarded everyone else before they realised the ambu lift had frozen to the fuselage. If we hadn't wanted to get away it would have been quite comical watching them with a tiny pot of salt trying to get it lose. By the time they did and de'iced the plane it was decided the airport would close before we landed so we had to get off. Having sat there for over 2 hours with the cabin door open -8 degrees, and no heating
It took them 2.5 hours to rebook us, and get hotels so when they said it would be another hour for a taxi, we booked our own. 4 hours later we had to get up to head back to the airport, again booking own cabs. Guess what the power in the hotel was down so we had to dress in the pitch black and walk down 4 flights of stairs. They put us back on the plane at just after 6am, where we sat for hours as the cockpit had frozen up, with the cabin door open, again. We think the other passengers thought it was our fault again!
It did look pretty frozen at - 13.
Then Sumburgh airport broke down, so we got disembarked. again to sit there for hours being told nothing. When the 2.30 was also cancelled we made the decision to get the ferry.
Probably the best as there is no power as the cable is down and lots of snow. We are so, so grateful our amazing neighbours walked over half a mile in the snow to feed the cats and chickens. Hope we can get down the road tomorrow.
Here are a couple of his photos. You can see where the cable is down
