Coffee and History

Thursday, after Robs hospital appointment, we ate our lunch on the pier and watched this smart Great Northern diver swim by.

Friday , Jill did her trip over to Mossbank for PA day. The weather was almost torrential rain so the waterfalls were amazing enroute. Still a few patches of snow.

Wee bit of Aurora at bed time.

Today, we had another warm hub day at the hall. Nice coffee and lunch and plenty of chat. Great way to get to know some new locals. They are so friendly. We sat with David today who is Mr Walls history. We learnt a lot more about the house and it turns out his family lived in it and ran a shop for a while in the late 1800's. Yes, the house was a shop and a post office for 15 years.  We didn't know that. We also have 2 new family names connected to the house that we didn't know about. We also found why our own research had met no answers. It used to be Wattsness  up to the early 1900's, now it is just known as Watsness and with the house being called Sutherland house we were researching the wrong thing. doh!  The two new family names are Thomson and Law. Apparently a relative of the Thomsons still lives in Lerwick.

The other bit of information was the name of the Minister who was the first inhabitant. Archibald Nichols.

We discussed the RAF base a bit and another local mentioned his relatives said they used to go up there in the 1940's as one of the buildings up there was a p in cute house. it so needs an interpretive board up there!!!!

We did a wee bit of bird watching on the way back, so an awesome day. Lots of frisky, bouncy hares too.

What a lovely day. We love our house!
