Long drive today up the Alaska highway between Hythe and Fort Nelson of 525km. Unfortunately, it rained just about all day but we still managed a few stops along the route. One of the most productive was just a roadside pull in which backed onto woodland. It was packed full of birds and gave us 6 new species for the trip list.
As they day went on, we saw good numbers of bears and took our tally to 15 black bears and one grizzly. It was amazing to see the two species together and to see some more playful cubs. Still haven't seen a moose. We have seen several limping bears and today we had an adult with a missing leg. It seems this is common and is presumably the result of metal traps. Whatever, it is awful to see.
