Wrong winds

We had booked for Skerries today and decided to go as its so nice, but we weren't expecting to find much as the migratory wind was blowing from the North. It was a VERY rough crossing.

But actually a lovely day, if a bit chilly. Jill explored a bit more of the islands as there were not many birds.  A friend mentioned Barrel valley

Thinking it might have a history of smuggling Jill went to investigate. It turns out it's not those sort of barrels!. Nice walk though.

Need to find the ordinance survey map to see if there was a broch. These walls certainly look like they were a path to somewhere.

Lots of meadow pipits and over 70 wheatears over the day. One Reed bunting, one tree pipit, a pair of eider and a Chaffinch!

It was still rough coming back!

We decided, as it hadn't been good for birds, to go to Hillswick to see the rare for Shetland Smew.
